Palani Murugan Temple
Your pilgrimage begins at Trichy Airport or Trichy Railway Station. Meet your driver and start the journey towards Palani Murugan Temple, one of the most visited and revered Murugan temples in Tamil Nadu.
According to mythology, Sage Narada presented the divine fruit of wisdom to Lord Shiva. Shiva announced that the fruit would be given to whichever of his sons first circled the world three times. Muruga began travelling around the world on his peacock, while Ganesha circled Shiva and Shakti, understanding them to be the entire universe.
When Muruga returned and learned that Ganesha had received the fruit, he left Mount Kailash and chose the Palani Hills as his abode. This sacred story is closely associated with the wisdom that “You yourself are the fruit.”
Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple
After breakfast, travel from Palani to Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple near Madurai. The temple is known for its remarkable rock-cut architecture and powerful spiritual atmosphere.
According to legend, Thiruparankundram is the place where Lord Muruga married Deivayanai, the divine daughter of Indra, after his victory over the asuras.
The shrine is also connected with Lord Shiva and the devotional traditions associated with Arunagirinathar. The temple’s ancient rock-cut construction gives it a distinct and majestic appearance.
Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple
Travel to Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple, a sacred hill shrine associated with the great Tamil poet and saint Avvaiyar.
According to the famous story, Lord Muruga appeared before Avvaiyar as a young village boy seated on a fruit tree. Through a playful exchange about “roasted” and “unroasted” fruits, Muruga humbled the learned poet and revealed the limits of human knowledge.
When Avvaiyar realised that the boy was none other than Lord Muruga, she bowed before him and prayed for his continued grace and guidance in her pursuit of wisdom.
Thiruchendur Murugan Temple
After breakfast, travel to Thiruchendur Murugan Temple, one of the most sacred coastal temples dedicated to Lord Muruga.
According to mythology, Muruga emerged from the sparks of Lord Shiva’s third eye and became the commander of the divine forces. He arrived at Thiruchendur to lead the devas in battle against Surapadman and the asuras.
After six days of battle, Muruga’s Vel defeated Surapadman. The asura was transformed into the peacock, which became Muruga’s vehicle, and the rooster, which became the symbol on his banner. Thiruchendur is therefore strongly associated with victory, courage and the destruction of negativity.
Swamimalai Murugan Temple
Travel from Thiruchendur to Swamimalai, one of the most spiritually significant temples in the Aaru Padai Veedu pilgrimage.
According to the Sthala Puranam, Lord Muruga questioned Lord Brahma about the meaning of the sacred Pranava Mantra “Om.” When Brahma could not explain it properly, Muruga imprisoned him.
Lord Shiva then asked Muruga to explain the meaning of Om. Muruga agreed, but taught Shiva as a Guru instructing a student. This earned him the name Swaminatha Swami, meaning the teacher of Shiva.
In keeping with this legend, Muruga’s shrine stands above on the hillock, while Lord Shiva’s shrine is located below.
Thiruthani Murugan Temple
On the final day, travel from Swamimalai to Thiruthani Murugan Temple, the sixth sacred abode in the pilgrimage.
Thiruthani is traditionally associated with Lord Muruga’s marriage to Valli. The temple is also connected with the life of the great composer Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar.
According to tradition, Muruga appeared to Dikshitar in the form of an old man on the temple steps and placed sacred prasadam in his mouth. This divine experience inspired Dikshitar to compose his first song in praise of Lord Muruga of Thiruthani.
After darshan, the six-temple Aaru Padai Veedu pilgrimage comes to a spiritually fulfilling conclusion.
