About Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple

A clear overview of the temple’s sacred architecture, important features and visitor information.

Dwaraka of the South

Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple is one of Kerala’s most important Hindu pilgrimage centres. The temple is closely associated with the worship of Lord Krishna and is visited by large numbers of devotees throughout the year.

Traditional Temple Layout

As per tradition, the shrine faces east and has two gopurams: the eastern entrance, known as Kizhakkenada, and the western entrance, known as Padinjarenada.

Deepastambam

In front of the eastern side of the Nalambalam stand the famous Deepastambams, or pillars of light. The eastern Deepastambam is approximately 24 feet high and has thirteen circular receptacles. It creates a spectacular sight when fully lit.

Golden Dwajasthambam

Another important feature is the Dwajasthambam, a ceremonial flagstaff that rises to approximately 70 feet and is fully covered with gold.

Sree Kovil and Garbhagriha

The square-shaped Sree Kovil contains two stairways and three inner rooms. The innermost sacred space is the Garbhagriha, where the idol of Sree Krishna is placed.

Images of Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa and Edathedathu Kavil Bhagavathy can also be found within the temple complex.

Temple Entry

As stated in the supplied temple information, only Hindus are allowed inside the temple. Visitors should follow the current dress code, entry rules and temple procedures in force at the time of travel.
