About Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Discover the temple’s sacred history, Travancore royal connection, architecture and visitor guidance.

One of the 108 Divya Desams

The history of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple dates back to the 8th century. It is one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples known as Divya Desams.

The presiding deity is Lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha, the hooded serpent. The city name Thiruvananthapuram literally refers to the sacred land of Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswamy.

Kerala and Dravidian Architecture

The temple combines the architectural traditions of Kerala and the Dravidian south, creating a distinctive and imposing sacred complex within East Fort.

Marthanda Varma and the Travancore Kingdom

Marthanda Varma, one of the most important Travancore rulers, carried out major renovations that contributed to the present-day structure of the temple.

He introduced important observances such as Murajapam and Bhadra Deepam. Murajapam, meaning continuous chanting of prayers, is traditionally conducted once every six years.

Thripadidanam

In 1750, Marthanda Varma dedicated the kingdom of Travancore to Lord Padmanabha. This act was known as Thripadidanam.

The royal family thereafter ruled as servants of Lord Padmanabha and used the title Padmanabha Dasa.

Parasurama Kshetra and Padma Theertham

The temple is believed to stand in one of the seven Parasurama Kshetras. References to the shrine are found in texts such as the Skanda Purana and Padma Purana.

The temple stands near the holy Padma Theertham tank, meaning “lotus spring.” The shrine is currently administered by a trust headed by the erstwhile Travancore royal family.
