The vehicle will proceed towards Pamba, while parking is generally arranged at Nilakkal, approximately 4 km away from Pamba. Pilgrims can freshen up at the sacred Pamba River before beginning the trek.

From Pamba, Sabarimala is reached by walking approximately 4 km. The trek can take around 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the pilgrimage season, crowd level and individual walking pace.

Sabarimala is located in the Western Ghats at an elevation of about 914 metres above sea level. The temple is surrounded by dense forests and rugged mountain terrain, creating a powerful spiritual atmosphere for devotees.

About the Sacred Shrine

Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple

Sabarimala is one of India’s most important Hindu pilgrimage centres and is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. The shrine is situated within the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats and is traditionally approached on foot from Pamba.

The temple is approximately 72 km from Pathanamthitta, 191 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 210 km from Kochi. Other traditional access routes include Erumeli, Vandiperiyar, Uppupara, Chalakkayam and Pullumedu, each known for scenic beauty and mythological significance.

Main Pilgrimage Seasons

The principal pilgrimage season runs from November to mid-January. Mandala Pooja and Makaravilakku are the two major events. The temple also opens during Vishu and for the first five days of every Malayalam month, subject to the official temple calendar.
